Join us for an unmissable Guided Tour of our historic Boston Lodge works or get involved in one of our ‘hands on’ Workshops! We are now excited to offer extra activities in addition to our popular train journeys, with the intention of enhancing your visit to our much loved railways!
Discover the fascinating story of the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways on a Guided Tour of our historic 200-year-old Boston Lodge Engineering Works, led by one of our passionate railway volunteers! Find out about the special people and characters that shaped the works and the railway from the beginning to the present day.
Learn all about the carriages and locomotives that have been built and maintained on this site for over three centuries and the special role it plays in the local community. Hear about gravity trains, when the site was a munitions factory staffed by women and how the railway was saved by volunteers in the 1950s.
Our Workshops also allow you an opportunity to find out how a steam engine works and have a go at driving one yourself or to get involved in uncovering some of the historic floors and walls around the site in one of our special ‘hands on’ workshops!

How Steam Locomotives Work
These three-hour workshops give you a chance – in a small group – to learn more about how a steam loco works. Two of our friendly loco drivers/fitters with in-depth experience of building, maintaining and driving locos will take you through the way a steam engine works.
Thanks to the Interpretation & Boston Lodge Project, made possible by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Ffestiniog Railway Society and FfWHR Trust.
