The £150,000 restoration of Welsh Pony has reached a major milestone with the delivery of parts for the loco’s new boiler. Designs for the new boiler were completed in early February.
The major components delivered for the new welded boiler include the long boiler barrel – a section of which will be cut away to leave the top side of the outer firebox – the dome and the firebox sides. These have been delivered rolled and cut to shape as much as possible, leaving lots of work still to be done, including drilling and preparation for welding, before they are ready to be assembled.
