Welsh Highland Railway signalling improvements
The Welsh Highland Railway has no telegraph wires or fibre optic cable, so an innovative internet-based system is being developed that will replace 'staff and ticket' working.
While the Ffestiniog Railway has a reliable signalling system offering extremely flexible operation, the Welsh Highland has never had telegraph wires, cabling or fibre optic links along its 25 mile length. This presents a significant burden for both operations and maintenance staff. As a result, we are planning an innovative, internet-based system which is already under trial between Pont Croesor and Beddgelert. Rolling this system out to the whole railway will be a major - and expensive - undertaking.
Installation of the new system is now well underway. The S&T department are currently working on the installation at Rhyd Ddu, and will move on to Waunfawr in due course.
